About Dr. Rex Mahnensmith

Throughout his career in medicine, Dr. Rex Mahnensmith has provided compassionate care to patients while supporting the professional growth of students and colleagues. He has dedicated more than 90 percent of his professional life to direct patient care, which he continues today as a primary care internist at a community health center, where he recently accepted the position of chief medical officer. Dr. Rex Mahnensmith earlier served as a geriatric care provider with Genesis Elder Care Physician Services, after retiring as the clinical director of nephrology at the Yale School of Medicine and a full professor of Yale University.

Over the course of his 22 years at Yale, Dr. Rex Mahnensmith focused on providing primary care services to patients with chronic kidney disease. He served as a hospitalist when his patients required admission and as a hospitalist attending on a yearly basis. Dr. Mahnensmith also took on the roles of pediatric attending physician and clinical educator, while also supporting organizational operations as the clinical director of nephrology and the medical director of dialysis.

The recipient of numerous clinical service and teaching awards, Dr. Rex Mahnensmith stands out for twice being named Teacher of the Year and for winning a Model Physician Award. He has published more than two dozen peer-reviewed articles and has given numerous invited lectures, although he remains primarily focused on building empathetic and trusting relationships with his patients.
